Bulgarian ladies in traditional folk dress

I hope my girlfriends and I still want to dress up when we're 85.

Krasimir, I SAW you looking at Tsvetlana's celebratory loaf of bread.

Busted.

The Wandering Mummer

There was also a contingent of Wookies, who wore crossbows attached to their artillery belts and marched in a phalanx to Vader's theme song.

You're kind of wondering if I'm kidding, right?

Not my kind of mummer

Not visiting this village.

It's not all bells and smells at Mummer fest 2008

Drag is common at the Mummer festival (another similarity that Pernik shares with Baltimore). If you're just tuning in, I'm posting my photos from the 2008 Mummer (aka Kookeri) Festival in Pernik. It might be like carnivale in Latin American countries, but I wouldn't know, because I only sort of know what I'm talking about here. One of the main differences is that instead of people dressing up in feathers and bikinis and dancing to the rhythm of the night, the participants dress in terrifying animal skins and masks and shake violently to drum beats.

But not this guy. This fella was part of a crew of Roma mummers who dressed up in drag and carried around puppies and pigs in carriages and slings. That's one way to go.

Fine, you have the biggest bells, alright?

It's gotta be ripe in there

I love the bear people. Who doesn't love the bear people?

I LOVED "Chorus Line"

No masks, just huge bells

In some ways, bigger bells are more manly.

From the back

Different towns have different mummers

This is the front side. He's shakin' it for me.

Party hats

It smells like a goat up in here!

These kookeri (another name for the mummers) were dancing intensely to the drumbeats. The smell was also intense.

Mummer's Festival 2008: Crazy Fur

Hey! Long time no blog. I got this job and all of a sudden it's like I don't care about what's really important. Anyhow, I have lots of fun things to show you...FROM BULGARIA. Imagine that. This here's a picture from the Mummer's Festival in Pernik, which is not necessarily a beautiful city, but they sure can throw a parade.

The festival revolves around an age-old tradition where the bachelors in town get together to drink, don some crazy skins and scary masks, drink, dance away evil spirits and shimmy for fertility. And drink. Sounds like a Friday night in Baltimore to me. This particular festival (they're held all over the country at the end of January) showcased folk performances and games from international mummers groups, some of whom came all the way from India, Ireland, Serbia and Georgia (the country, folks)! I'll post more photos over the next couple days.

Don't clean your shoes on this one.

Well, I got a job, but look at who I get to work with! Like the other IT guys, he's a little reclusive and prickly, but really cute. He belongs to my workmate Georgi who rescued him from the mean streets of Sofia. So far, we've seen him sleep, crawl around, and puke up water. Awesome!
